Wilton Windmill reopened for the season on Friday 15th April 2022.  We will be open for the duration of the Queens Jubilee celebrations, 2pm to 5pm on Thursday 2nd June – Sunday 5th June.  We are now milling flour again and there are plenty of bags available in our normal outlets.  A team of willing volunteers have given the entire mill a thorough spring clean ready for use again.  But lots is still happening in the background to keep the mill in good order, you may have noticed that the cap has recently been repainted and is now looking very smart indeed.

Talking of smart, we have recently been participating in an exciting high tech project with a group called ‘Smartmolen‘ who are developing a system to monitor the wind speed and direction that windmills are exposed to.  There are currently six windmills in the Beta technology trial, Wilton in Wiltshire, Upminster and Stock in Essex, Fulwell in Sunderland, Jill Mill at Clayton in Sussex and Polkey’s in Norfolk.  You can have a look at the fascinating data being captured live in the beta version of the software by clicking here. Smartmolen are also very excited because on Saturday 13th November 2021 their project entry was judged for an award by the The British Association of Friends of Museums, BAFM, which encourages, informs and advises friends, supporters and volunteers of museums, galleries, and other cultural organisations in all sections of our UK heritage.

We are thrilled to report that they were the winners of the BAFM Impact Award 2021! The award recognised the quality, innovation and impact of their digital telemetry project which they’ve developed as an educational and general interest resource to help everyone understand how windmill caps and sails turn in different wind conditions. Excitingly, it allows everyone to connect to the windmills live from their own home, and helps monitor the mills so we can intervene if needed to reduce the likelihood of damage in severe weather. Wilton Windmill Society are proud to be involved in the very early stages of this project.
