May the wind always be in her sails!
Set high above the village of Wilton, in the heart of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty, about 9 miles south east of Marlborough in Wiltshire, stands Wilton Windmill. She is now over 200 years old, the only working windmill in Wessex, yet still producing wholemeal, stone-ground flour (windmills are always 'she').
Shown below on our Wilton Windmill live webcam 24/7, here she is in all her glory and now she can be seen anytime from anywhere in the world! Our investment in our Wilton Windmill Live Webcam technology helps us monitor the mill for security, safety and operational reasons. We are delighted that our physical visitors can now see themselves live online at the mill. Now, our virtual visitors can also see the mill working online even if you can't get there in person. If you are local and want to see her working, be sure to sign up for notifications by ticking the 'Local - See it Milling' box.
Located at the eastern end of the stunningly beautiful Pewsey Vale, and at the heart of the Great West Way©, Wilton Windmill is open every year from Easter to the end of September on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 2pm to 5pm (last entry at 4.30pm). At these times the windmill building is open for guided tours and you can visit inside the Granary. The shepherd’s hut shop offers refreshments and gifts and provides a warm seating area.
You can visit the external Windmill site at any time – there is a picnic area with breath taking views across to the Downs and the building can be viewed from the outside. The sunsets here are to die for and it's a fabulous dark sky area for star gazing. A portaloo is available all year.
Dogs are very welcome, but please keep them on a lead and pick up any mess before you leave.
Wilton Windmill is in the middle of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a tranquil unspoilt landscape of rolling chalk downland, forests, woods and dales. With so much space and so few people, you could be forgiven for thinking you are the only one on the downs!
From the mill you are within walking distance of the Kennet & Avon Canal, Wilton Water and Crofton Beam Engines. It's surrounded by pretty villages such as Wilton, Great Bedwyn and Shalbourne - all of which have pubs. Just down the lane from the Windmill is The Swan Inn which is child and dog friendly, serves great food and local beers and has a garden and parking.
Volunteers from the Wilton Windmill Society operate the open day rotas and raise funds to maintain the mill. Any financial contribution towards its maintenance are really appreciated and can be left in the donation box by the gate when you visit. You can also get involved by volunteering or becoming a member.
While you are at the mill, be sure to make the most of the surrounding area too... click on the Visit Pewsey Vale website to discover ideas for walking and cycling in this beautiful and unique part of the world. We look forward to seeing you and hope that you enjoy your visit!
