Wilton Windmill has many facilities for visitors to enjoy…

Parking

Parking facilities for 2 coaches or a dozen or so cars is available in the layby on the lane opposite the main gates to the Windmill site.  When the Windmill is open (and on Open Days) parking is available in the field next to the windmill site, via the gateway next to the main Windmill entrance.  Please remember to take valuables with you and not to leave them in the car as unfortunately thieves are known to target this area. There is a level gravel track leading from the lane to the windmill field.

Windmill Field

Access to the Windmill site is available at any time, but you will only be able to access the Windmill. grannary or shop during normal opening times, on Open Days or during pre-arranged visits/groups.  Picnic tables and bench facilities are available in the corner of the windmill field which you are welcome to use at any time.  It’s a fabulous dark sky spot for stargazing on a clear night.

Windmill Accessibility

The upper floors of the windmill are only accessible via steep steps and so are not suitable for everyone.  We apologise if this impedes your enjoyment of the windmill, but it’s a 19th century design!  The ground floor display area is accessible and does not involve steps.   On the accessible ground floor of the windmill there is an Information Centre which includes a wonderful display of how the mill is used to create flour from local grain, along with artifacts and a life-size model of a miller circa 1890.  There is also an audio/visual display where you can see footage of the mill in its full working glory, starting with the sacks being hauled up the mill, following the grain back down through the mill, into the stones where it is milled and finally emerging as flour.

The Granary

The relocated and restored Granary facility opened in 2019 and houses historic artefacts, photographs and information boards.  Access to The Granary is up a few steps.

Shepherd’s Hut

Our beautiful shepherd’s hut facilities are open during normal opening times and provides refreshments, tickets for guided tours, mementos of your visit as well as a seating area.  Access to the shepherd’s hut is up a few steps.  WiFi is available for visitors to use at the shepherd’s hut.

Toilet

There is a Portaloo facility on site which is available at all times throughout the year.

Information Board

An information board is available on the site which has details of the history of the Windmill and how it works as well as notices about events.  This is very useful if you are visiting when we aren’t open.

Group Visits

We are always very pleased to take groups around the windmill outside of our normal opening hours.  Pricing and other group information can be found here and a minimum charge of £25 for a group visit applies.  Please note that each guided tour takes about an hour (it can be longer!) and because of the space inside the mill, you can only have about 15 or so people in each tour.
