Classic Car Day
July 2003

July 2003, saw the first ever Wilton Windmill Vintage and Classic Car Day, and in the tradition for the mill, we were blessed with a warm sunny day.

On Sunday 27th July a Vintage and classic car rally was held in the grounds of Wilton Windmill.  After dreadful weather on the previous day the skies brightened and a glorious warm afternoon welcomed the thirty-five or so cars and their drivers that came up to the mill.  There were a good variety of cars from Austin 7’s and Triumph Heralds to early Bentleys and Rolls Royce’s.  Also some kit cars, a 1926 Sunbeam motorbike and a Volkswagen Beetle.  Cream Teas and ice creams flowed all afternoon, the grass was covered in picnickers and deckchairs and over a hundred visitors actually went on a windmill tour.

Comments from the visitors showed the enthusiasm and enjoyment many had for the afternoon, being pleased the event was small, not pretentious and held at a local venue, rather than a big event at the usual Stately Home.  Several owners commented on how pleased they were to chat to the general public visiting instead of just other car owners.  When the fleet of seventeen Rolls Royce and Bentleys arrived after their owner’s lunch at the ‘Windmill Restaurant’ in Marten it was quite a sight!  Their ages ranging from 1930 to 1990 and all in fantastic condition!   All in all a fabulous afternoon.
